Do I Need A Root Canal?

Root canal Treatment

What Is A Root Canal?

Root canal treatment is a common procedure used to save a tooth that has become infected or inflamed. It is typically recommended when the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels) becomes damaged or infected.

A small opening will be made in the top of the tooth, and special instruments will be used to remove the damaged pulp. The inside of the tooth will then be cleaned and disinfected to prevent further infection. A rubber-like material called gutta-percha will be placed inside the tooth to fill and seal the space left by the removed pulp.

Does A Root Canal Hurt?

Root canal treatment is typically a relatively simple procedure, and most patients experience no discomfort during and after the procedure. In some cases, some patients may experience mild pain. Over-the-counter pain medication and ice can be used to manage any discomfort if it occurs.

It is normal to experience some sensitivity in the treated tooth for a few days after the procedure, but this should subside as the tooth heals. It is important to attend all of your follow-up appointments with your dentist and to practice good oral hygiene to help ensure the success of your root canal treatment.

Another common question that is asked is how long a root canal will take. The length of the appointment varies on the shape and size of the canals, the number of canals and the skill level of the dentist.

How Effective Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a highly effective and commonly performed procedure that can save a damaged or infected tooth and prevent the need for more extensive and costly dental work in the future. It is the last foreseeable option to save a natural tooth. Different studies have produced a range of survival and success percentages, but typically fall in the 90-95% range. With proper care, many teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime

If you are experiencing tooth pain or discomfort, it is important to talk to your dentist to determine if root canal treatment is the right solution for you.
